Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet admits he did not hear the whistle at Anfield on Tuesday, seconds before David Luiz put Chelsea one nil up.
According to Sportfm.az, Adam Lallana was adjudged to have brought down Eden Hazard in the first half, prompting referee Mark Clattenburg to hand the visitors a free-kick.
However, as Luiz lined-up his set-piece, Mignolet was still sorting out his wall and keeping tabs on those around him inside the box.
The Belgium international ended up paying the price, with Clattenburg blowing the whistle and Luiz smashing a fantastic effort into the corner with Mignolet left stranded.
Liverpool players complained that they did not hear Clattenburg’s whistle, but replays clearly showed the Durham-born official blowing seconds before Luiz hit his free-kick.
"Well I didn’t hear the whistle,” Mignolet told BT Sport. "And then he hit it early, which makes it difficult for you.
"It was a good free-kick in the end, obviously you want to give yourself a good chance of saving it, but that didn’t happen today.”
